2020 UCI Mountain Bike Cross-Country World Championships presented by Mercedes-Benz in Albstadt

Albstadt will be the venue for the 31st Mountain Bike World Championships in 2020. From June 25th to 28th, the world’s best cross-country specialists will meet in the Swabian Alb and compete for the coveted rainbow jerseys. Champions will meet in Albstadt in the team competition, the E-MTB category, the juniors, U23- and as a highlight in the elite races for women and men.

Albstadt has long since established itself as a hot spot in the international competition scene for mountain bikers. For seven years in a row, from 2013 to 2019, the city of 46,000 has hosted the only Mountain Bike World Cup in Germany – more often than any other place in Germany before. This means that Albstadt is also among one of the top organizers internationally.

The witch’s cauldron in the “Bullentäle” has become a trademark where year after year, 10,000 and more spectators create a unique atmosphere.

But in 2020, the mountain bike mecca in the Swabian Alb will go the extra mile. Albstadt will have the honour of hosting the world championships. It will be only the second time in the history of cross-country sports that the coveted rainbow jerseys of the world champions will be competed for in Germany. 25 years after the successful World Championships in Kirchzarten in 1995, Albstadt wants to show the athletes and the audience a perfect stage for the big emotions.

The best German mountain bikers, some of them from Baden-Württemberg, want to “have their say” four weeks before the Olympic Games in Tokyo with the support of the local audience. The fans can look forward to fascinating sports, a mix of steep climbing and spectacular downhill runs, duels, small and bigger dramas, which they can experience first-hand.

The fact that Ronja Eibl, a great hope from the Zollern-Alb ’82 Albstadt e.V. cycling club, will be taking part in the U23 junior category gives the World Championships another special touch. As talented representatives of the younger generation, the 20-year-old young woman from Grosselfingen and Max Brandl, the 22-year-old student from Freiburg will also be acting as World Championship ambassadors.

The competitions start on Thursday, June 25, 2020 with the team relay. This will be a premiere, because for the first time there will be not five but six athletes forming a relay team, consisting of three female and three male cyclists (U19, U23 and Elite). One by one, each member of the relay team will drive one lap on the track that´s more than four-kilometers long.

This will be followed by the second edition of the E-MTB World Championship. After the World Championships in Canada 2019, this is the first time on European soil for the booming bike category.

The cross-country races will then begin on Friday, June 26. First the female juniors will compete, followed by the male juniors. On Saturday morning, the U23 men will open the competitions before the elite ladies will be the event´s first big highlight.

After the U23 ladies have chosen their best on Sunday morning, the title races will be concluded by the big showdown of the men’s elite in the battle for the ninth rainbow jersey of the World Championships week.

The competitions are the heart of the event. However, they will be complemented by an entertaining supporting programme. It is already certain that the paddock of professional teams and national teams will be worth one, two or more visits for the fans. This is where you can experience the top athletes from all over the world, look over their shoulders or get an autograph. A selection of them will be seen fighting for Olympic medals in Tokyo five weeks later. Many exhibitors will be promoting their developments and products on the grounds and tourism regions will be presenting their offers.

Of course, visitors will also be provided with culinary delights in the large tent and at various stands. There will be shows, music and parties, altogether an event for the entire family. Lovers of art and culture will also get their money’s worth with the supporting programme.

And the memories of the World Championships in Albstadt will not only be stored in your mind, but can also be complemented with one of the merchandising items that have been specially produced for the 2020 UCI Mountain Bike Cross-Country World Championships presented by Mercedes-Benz.

These can be purchased in advance at the Albstadt Tourist Information Center and other points of sale.
